Raise the Black Flag
Performance of artist Luce (Edmunds Lūcis).
26.12.2011, Inčupe, Saulkrasti, Baltā kāpa, Latvia
Unbeknownst to the select group of seekers who witnessed Luce give an outward manifestation of his inward journey, their long trek was to be rewarding on a both physical and spiritual plane. Their impressions were not clouded by “a priori” knowledge of where they were to be led or why. Luce walks, carrying the symbol of his transformation literally on his back, and they follow.
Arriving on a desolate windswept beech, he puts down his burden and then like the transmutations of ancient alchemy; his negredo begins as he builds the symbol of his reincarnation from the ashes of his burden. A flagstaff emerges and he hands eight sturdy ropes to bystanders whom he directs to help support as he raises a long, three fingered black flag high above the beach. Boreas instantly attacks the flag but Luce holds tight while eight stakes are hammered into the earth.
Luce stands back and acknowledges the group and the black flag. He takes a gold length of cloth and approaches each witness one at a time, cutting a small piece of cloth and handing it to each in turn, he kisses them warmly. They leave the artist sitting, facing the sea, coming to terms with his own reincarnation as the black flag stands strong.
