Exhibition “WAR” is curated by Evelina Vanaga and artist Edmund Luce. The show presents more than twenty-five artworks spanning a wide range of disciplines. The theme of the show is chosen to stimulate cultural collaboration in the realm of art between different countries. The goal is to help attain mutual understanding of the theme and offer insight on war from different angles. Every artist in the show is sharing personal experience and unique attitude.
The task of the show is to look for connections and link creativity, social development and responsibility of societies in local, European and worldwide context. The issues are formed around tolerance, considerateness and criticism. The theme is discussed while paraphrasing functions of war including: different factors and their meanings in the process of it, the roles of viewers, and observers, and possible impacts. In the center of the artworks’ attention are questions considering military, economical and political intervention.
Artists of different generations and different countries are presenting fresh conversations which are concentrated on the problematic aspect linked to influence of associations, illusions, rituals, myths, relationships, rights, responsibilities and concepts of ourselves and others. Artworks are also reflecting banal, domestic scenes and environmental problems. They are breaking absurdities and taboos in an unique and personal way in order to analyze the past and encourage awareness of anticipating future.
In the setup of the exhibition artists are utilizing walls, ceiling, floor, windows and scaffolds. They are expanding the space of the premises using sculptures, three dimensional installations, photography and paintings which illustrate public/individual, local/global, physical/psychological recreations of the space of war. Artists are operating with shapes of bodies, shadows, sounds, light and dark and personal stories to reveal their concepts. Therefore they don’t come up with just one answer, but they present an interpretation of time and evolution within relations; movement and changing processes. Artworks are not only intimate, as the exhibition in general offers unlimited possibilities for the viewers to create their own position and frame it in a global context.
The show is set in the unique premises of 1200 m2 that are generously provided by the present owners of a rented out office building that in the past was the shoe factory “1st May”. Artists will be present during opening time of the exhibition all three days to greet visitors and create discourse.
